One more half-rainy day in Kyiv

I took this photo on my evening run today.

Last week in Kyiv was unusually hot. We jumped from our winter trousers straight into shorts. Today, we’re back to hiding all parts of our legs. The temperature is slowly going down and will plateau at around 12 degrees Celsius for the next few days. This early heat made me surprisingly anxious and agitated. I welcome the change in weather and I welcome the change in me. It’s cooler. I’m cooler.

The morning began with rain and it continues to rain. It’s one of those days when the rain never stops. I am wearing a new old purple coat and black Adidas trousers I bought at a second-hand shop over the weekend. Before I reach a coffee shop, both get wet.

I wanted coffee so bad this morning. It’s how the rain affects me – makes me crave for a coffee to rain down my throat. It rained, but I didn’t like the taste. I wanted something simple and grounding, but this one was exotic and fiery. I’ll have to find my second cup in another place to match my current mood.

People wear colourful coats and raincoats. People carry colourful parasolkya (umbrellas). Somehow rain leaks colour out from people. After the winter – as soon as it got sunny and bright – I saw a sudden and dramatic increase in people wearing black hoodies and trousers. Is it us going against nature or trying to adapt to its…
